Understanding Depression

What is depression?

Depression therapy in Newmarket can be the first step out of a place that has come to feel permanent. Depression is not laziness, weakness, or a character flaw. It is a response — one your mind and body make when something has become too much to carry alone. For some it arrives as a crushing weight. For others it is quieter — a flatness that has become so familiar it feels like who you are.

At Newmarket Therapy Centre, our approach to depression therapy in Newmarket helps you understand what your depression is responding to — the feelings pushed aside, the needs unmet, the parts of yourself hidden. Depression is one of the most common mental health concerns in Canada. It is also one of the most treatable.

Signs & Symptoms

How do I know I have depression?

Recognising the signs is often the first step people take before booking depression therapy in Newmarket. Depression looks different for different people. Some feel it as sadness. Others feel nothing at all — just a flatness or exhaustion. If any of these fit, you may be living with depression:

  • Persistent low mood or emptiness that does not lift
  • Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed
  • Fatigue or heaviness that makes daily tasks feel enormous
  • Sleeping too much, too little, or waking unrefreshed
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive self-criticism
  • Withdrawal from people, relationships, and social life
You do not need to reach crisis point to seek support. The sooner you do, the more effective the work tends to be.
Our Approach

How we treat depression at Newmarket Therapy Centre

Depression therapy in Newmarket works best when it addresses the whole person — not just the symptoms. Depression rarely has a single cause. Beneath it there is often something that has never been fully felt — grief, anger, or a truth that has not had space to be spoken. Real change begins when we address what is underneath, not only what is visible.

Our team draws on a range of evidence-based approaches — matched to what is actually driving your depression, not a one-size-fits-all protocol:

Gold Standard

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Meets the feelings underneath the depression — grief, anger, or truth that has never had space. Often reaches what CBT alone cannot.

Cognitive

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Identify the thought patterns and beliefs that keep depression alive, and build more realistic and helpful ways of responding.

Parts-Based

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Meet the depressed part with curiosity rather than fighting it — often revealing what it has been protecting you from feeling.

Trauma-Based

EMDR Therapy

For depression rooted in past trauma or unresolved experiences — helps the brain reprocess what has been shaping the present.

Body-Based

Somatic Therapy

Works with what the body is still holding — the heaviness, the fatigue, the disconnection — often at a level talk therapy cannot reach.

Brain-Based

Neurofeedback

Trains the brain's own regulation directly — particularly useful for depression that has not fully responded to talk therapy alone.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is depression therapy effective?
Yes. Depression is one of the most treatable mental health conditions. Research consistently shows that psychotherapy — particularly when matched to the underlying causes — produces significant and lasting improvement in the majority of people.
How long does depression therapy take?
It depends on the nature and depth of the depression. For situational depression, meaningful improvement is often possible within 12–20 sessions. For depression with deeper roots in trauma or long-standing patterns, the work takes longer and tends to be more thorough as a result.
What types of depression do you treat?
Our therapists work with the full range of depression presentations — including major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), postpartum depression, seasonal affective disorder, trauma-related depression, and high-functioning depression. The label matters less than understanding what is driving it for you.
Will I need medication alongside therapy?
Therapy is effective for depression with or without medication. Some people benefit from both, particularly when depression is severe. This is a personal decision — one we encourage you to discuss with your GP or psychiatrist. We work collaboratively with medical professionals where relevant.
Can I do depression therapy online?
Yes. Online depression therapy is available across Ontario and works equally well as in-person for most presentations. All approaches are available virtually — with the exception of neurofeedback, which requires in-person attendance at our Newmarket location.
What if I am having thoughts of suicide or self-harm?
Please reach out for support today. If you are in immediate danger, go to your nearest emergency department or call 911. You can also contact the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline (call or text 9-8-8, available 24/7 across Canada). You do not need to be in crisis to contact us — but if you are, please prioritise immediate support first.
