Understanding Stress

What are stress and overwhelm?

Stress is usually treated as a personal problem — something to manage with better time management or more self-discipline. We see it differently. Stress lives in the relationship between you and your life: the demands around you, the support available to you, and how much room there is for your own needs. When demands keep growing and support doesn't, any person will start to strain.

Overwhelm is what happens when everything feels urgent at once. Nothing gets finished, so nothing gets to rest. Unfinished tasks, unspoken frustrations, and needs that keep getting pushed to later all pile up — and the body stays braced, waiting for a break that never quite comes.

Stress therapy in Newmarket helps you step back, notice what is actually happening, and reconnect with what you need — so you can respond to your life with more clarity and less strain.

Signs & Symptoms

How do I know stress has become too much?

Stress shows up in the whole person — in the body, in your mood, in your thinking, and in your relationships. It often builds so gradually that you stop noticing it. If several of these sound familiar, it may be time for more support:

  • Feeling like everything is urgent and nothing is ever done
  • Tension in your neck, shoulders, jaw, or stomach that never fully lets go
  • Lying awake running through tomorrow's list
  • Snapping at people you care about, then feeling guilty
  • Struggling to focus, decide, or remember simple things
  • Saying yes when you mean no, then resenting it
  • Feeling flat, drained, or close to burnout
  • Rest that doesn't feel restful — even time off feels like more to manage
You do not have to reach a breaking point to deserve support. If you are running on empty, that is reason enough.
Our Approach

How we help with stress and overwhelm

At Newmarket Therapy Centre, we work with the whole person — mind, heart, body, and the authentic self underneath. Stress is never just a scheduling problem or just a body problem. Real change happens when every part of you is included.

01

Awareness comes before change

Before adding more strategies, we slow down and notice — where stress lives in your body, what drains you, what you keep postponing. Seeing your situation clearly is often the first real relief.

02

What matters most comes into focus

When everything feels equally urgent, nothing gets your full attention. Reconnecting with your own needs helps the most important thing rise to the surface, so you can give yourself to one thing at a time.

03

Restoring the rhythm of effort and rest

Healthy living moves between engaging and letting go. Stress breaks that rhythm. We help you find your way back to genuine rest — not as a reward for finishing everything, but as a natural part of living.

04

Boundaries: where you end and others begin

Much overwhelm comes from taking in more than you can hold. Learning to notice your limits, and to say no without guilt, gives you back a sense of space and choice.

05

You don't have to carry it alone

Stress isolates. A steady, attuned relationship with your therapist offers a place to set things down, think clearly, and feel supported — and helps you let others support you too.

Approaches we draw on

Within this whole-person view, our therapists bring in specific methods matched to you — not a one-size-fits-all protocol:

Practical

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Notice the thought patterns that turn pressure into panic — perfectionism, catastrophising, ‘should’ — and build more balanced ways of responding.

Values-Based

ACT — Acceptance & Commitment

Clarify what truly matters to you, and make choices from your values rather than from the pressure of every demand.

Body-Based

Somatic Experiencing

Helps your nervous system release the bracing that builds up under chronic stress, so your body can actually settle.

Brain-Based

Neurofeedback

Trains the brain toward calmer, steadier functioning — helpful when stress has turned into poor sleep, fog, or constant tension.

Parts-Based

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Get to know the driven, people-pleasing, or overwhelmed parts of you — and what they are trying to protect.

Emotion-Focused

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Access the feelings underneath stress — frustration, sadness, fear — so they can be expressed instead of carried in the body.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my stress needs therapy?
If stress is affecting your sleep, health, relationships, or ability to enjoy anything — or if you have been ‘getting through’ for months — it is worth reaching out. You don't need to wait for burnout. Often the clearest sign is that rest no longer restores you.
Will therapy just teach me stress management techniques?
Practical tools have their place, and your therapist can offer them. But managing stress better is not the same as changing what is causing it. We also look at your patterns, your limits, and your needs — so you are not just coping with an unsustainable life, but shaping a more sustainable one.
Can therapy help with burnout?
Yes. Burnout is what happens when stress has gone on too long without enough rest or support. Therapy helps you recover, understand how you got there, and make changes so it is less likely to happen again.
How long does stress therapy take?
Many people notice relief within a few sessions, simply from having space to step back. Deeper change — in patterns like over-functioning or difficulty saying no — usually takes a few months. Your therapist reviews progress with you regularly.
Can I do stress therapy online?
Yes. Online therapy is available across Ontario, and for busy people it often makes therapy easier to fit in. Neurofeedback is the one exception; it requires in-person sessions at our Newmarket location.
Is stress therapy covered by insurance?
In most cases, yes. Our team includes Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers, both of which are covered by most extended health plans in Ontario — Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, Blue Cross, Desjardins, and others. Check your specific plan for coverage limits.
